As important as how your furniture looks is how it is constructed. Norwalk makes each piece one at a time from only high quality materials. Norwalk guarantees the frames and internal parts for life and the fabrics and leathers for two years. So when you buy a piece of Norwalk furniture you know your getting lasting quality. Norwalk has it’s own wood products division in Cookeville, Tennessee but the main plant is in Norwalk, Ohio. Norwalk has been in business since 1902 and is the largest manufacturer of special order furniture in North America. Click here to learn the “inside story”.
Norwalk offers four cushion types and comfort packages. Choose extra firm, standard, spring and down or comfort down so whether comfortable to you means sink in soft or firm, you can choose the cushion and package that feels right for you.
If you see a style that’s almost what you want but not exactly you can use special applications to customize a style with virtually unlimited choices to create a look that’s distinctively your own. Add or delete a skirt, change leg styles, change number of cushions, use more than one fabric or a combo of fabric and leather. The Variation groups offer hundreds of combinations, you design it your way by choosing the cover, base, back, cushions and arm style.
Most Norwalk frames feature sinuous wire springs with three stabilizer bars also called stake wires. The “s” shape of the sinuous wire is a tight, close loop in heavy 8 gauge wire. They use five to six per seat and attach with insulated clips into the hardwood frame. The most highly touted spring system is probably eight-way hand tied. This is a coil spring that is literally tied in eight directions with twine. They cost more because they are more labor intensive. Consumer Reports magazine says “ In use, coil springs offer no advantages in comfort or durability over properly installed, heavy-gauge sinuous wire springs. Furniture Design & Manufacturing magazine calls eight-way hand tied coil springs “200 year old technology”. Some of Norwalk styles now come with a deluxe coil spring system, offering the relaxed, settle in kind of feeling. luxurious comfort with outstanding durability. The deluxe coil is based on a coil foundations that offers strength, resilience, and the deep seated comfort characteristic of finer upholstered furniture. More of a “sit in” rather than “sit on” kind of feel. All Norwalk frames come with a lifetime warranty.
Fabrics are tested extensively, approximately 70% of fabrics fail Norwalk’s strict testing. Before a fabric is offered in the line it has to endure 10,000 rubs against a wire screen on the Wyzenbeek machine, if it shows any sign of abrasion wear, the fabric fails and is not offered. Each fabric is tested for seam strengths, abrasion, wear, shrinkage, stretch, and color transfer so rest assured if it’s in the Norwalk fabric line, it’s one durable fabric. If you are not able to find a fabric or leather in our huge selection you may COM “customer’s own material” and send your own fabric to Norwalk, of course since your fabric has not been testing it will not carry their warranty.
Leather used by Norwalk is never “matched” with vinyl and they will not use split leather hides because they are not as strong. Just like our skin the outside is the strongest so Norwalk only uses the top part of the hide for their furniture. There are basically three types of leather: 1) Full grain sometimes called full top grain, top grain and nubuck. Full grain is uncorrected and needed no surface correction. Only about 3-5% of all hides meet the standard for full grain which is the most natural leather available. Like a fingerprint, each hide is unique with surface marks that document the animals life and testify to the leather's authenticity. 2) Top grain is partially or fully corrected, usually sanding and buffing to remove the old grain, then embossing to add a new artificial grain. This process removes some of the luxurious feel found in natural full grain leather, but the strength of top grain leather remains. 3) Nubuck leather has a slight nap effect produced by the removal of the hair cell layer. Nubucks provide the softest texture or hand of all leathers. Not to be confused with suede, nubucks are top grain leathers and much more serviceable and durable than suede's.
Norwalk’s duraframe is stronger and lighter than ever before. It may not look the same as it did when they started building furniture in 1902 but technology has allowed Norwalk to make a frame that will stand up to use. Combining solid hardwoods with hardwood laminates which are less likely to warp or split. Corners are double dowed, glued and screwed with corner blocks. All hardwoods have been kiln dried so you won’t have wood drying out in your home that would cause your frame to warp or rock. All frames feature a lifetime warranty so you can have peace of mind. |
